Liberty Day Pictures

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

Liberty Day left us with quite a few pictures on our cameras’ memory cards.

First there was a day of thought-provoking lectures from Doug Phillips and Bill Potter.

“History is like a Persian rug–there are literally thousands of interwoven strands which are required to make up the big picture.” — Paraphrase of Bill Potter

“As America remembers her 400th birthday at Jamestown in 1607, two competing histories and two rival visions of our nation have emerged.” — Doug Phillips

Then there was an evening featuring Liberty Day’s signature reenactment of the second Virginia Convention convention and Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty” speech…

A Vision for the Family at Wheaton

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

Almost two months ago, the Baroque Festival Orchestra (of which my brother Joel is concertmaster) provided special music at all three morning services at College Church in Wheaton.

It so happened that the guest speaker delivering the sermon that morning was Dr. Duane Litfin, president of Wheaton College.  He gave an excellent sermon on Psalm 127.  He analyzed the psalm in two parts.  First, he examined the general principle, which the psalmist gives in contrasting vanity of life outside God’s will with the fruitfulness and meaningfulness of life within God’s will.  Second, he examined the psalmist’s illustration of the general principle.  The first half of the psalm is essential but also theoretical; how do you know that something someone is doing really is “the Lord’s work”?  So the second half of the psalm gives the prime example of a custom task from the Lord – raising the children he’s given you.  Dr. Litfin pointed out aspects of how our culture tends to de-emphasize family.  The message the culture is giving women says that the thing that matters in life is to get a credential, get a career, get a position, etc., and that spending your time raising your family is a waste.  But this is a tragic reversal of the truth.

I can’t do justice to his sermon here in a nutshell summary, but it was a really powerful presentation.  You can download the sermon in MP3 format here.  It is exciting to see someone in the position of influence and authority as college president sharing the vision of the restoration of the Biblical family, family life, and multigenerational faithfulness.
