Reflections on Psalm 119: Aleph
Wednesday, January 30th, 2008The psalmist begins by commenting on the testimony of others (v. 1–3). This indicates the place that a testimony should have: it causes others to notice and reflect upon the impact of God’s word in a life. But this in itself is not enough; people are imperfect and fallible, and a faith based on the example of others is only as strong as that fallible example. So starting in v. 4, the observer (the psalmist) turns from the testimony of others to the intrinsic, self-attesting authority of God in Scripture. This is a sure, and infallible, foundation.
