Reflections on Psalm 119: Vau

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Here, the psalmist makes it crystal clear that God’s word has always been about salvation, mercy, and grace.  “Let thy mercies come also unto me, O LORD, even thy salvation, according to thy word” (v. 41).  Because of this, the psalmist has great joy in God’s word (v. 47–48).  Indeed, he turns the popular conception of the law as oppressive on its head.  The law is not oppressive; it is the source for true liberty.  God’s salvation frees us from sin, and we have the liberty to obey God’s law (v. 45; see also Romans 6:18, James 1:25).
